There’s so many reasons to love theatre, but I’d have to say my number one reason is the privilege to work in an environment that fosters close community through hard and diligent artistic work. Working with others and being a part of a group working toward the common goal of sharing stories through voices that are often drowned out by history, society, and the media is like nothing else for me. It is a special thing to be involved with the properties side of theatre, and guide audiences visually in an experience that will hopefully stay with them throughout their lifetimes.
I have been participating in theatre my entire life, but I wasn’t always a designer/technician. I started out as a performer when I was young, but then gradually became more interested in expressing myself through tangible means rather than performative. My senior year of highschool, I decided I would persue properties and puppetry full time and then interviewed at Baylor University Theater where I would be accepted into their theatre program. I’ve never looked back since and it has been such a wild and wonderful ride!
I often get the question, “Why puppetry?” Puppetry has always fascinated me my entire life. As a child, I would put on elaborate puppet shows for my family, and as a result my love for puppetry grew as I became older. Puppetry has a deep and rich history in Europe and many other parts of the world, and it has proved over thousands of years that it is an excellent tool for storytelling for all ages. Puppetry allows us to view our own reflections at an unbiased distance, and it can therefore be so much more impactful than human performance at times.
